North Liberty is growing fast.
The law hasn't caught up.

North Liberty doubled in population in a decade, but it still doesn't have a courthouse, federal court, or its own court system. Almost every case touching a North Liberty resident — traffic, OWI, divorce, custody, criminal — runs through the Johnson County Courthouse in Iowa City, ten minutes south. This site explains the system, the practice areas, and how to find the right attorney near you.

First questions, plain answers

How North Liberty cases work

Is there a courthouse in North Liberty?

No. North Liberty incorporated as a city in 1913 and has never had its own courthouse. All Johnson County state court matters — traffic, criminal, civil, family, probate, small claims — are heard at the Johnson County Courthouse, 417 S Clinton Street in Iowa City.

Where do I pay a North Liberty traffic ticket?

Two main options: online at iowacourts.gov (select Traffic Ticket, Johnson County, enter your case or citation number), or by mail to Clerk of District Court Traffic Violation Office, P.O. Box 2510, Iowa City, IA 52244-2510. Citations may take 2–3 weeks to appear in the online system after issue. Don't ignore a ticket — unpaid citations become warrants and license suspensions.

Where is the North Liberty Police Department?

25 West Cherry Street, North Liberty, IA 52317. Records: (319) 626-5724. Non-emergency dispatch is routed through the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center: (319) 356-6800. Office hours Mon–Fri 7 AM–4:30 PM. For emergencies, dial 911. See our Police Department guide.

What's an OWI in Iowa?

OWI = "Operating While Intoxicated." It's Iowa's name for what other states call DUI or DWI. BAC limits: 0.08% general drivers, 0.04% commercial drivers, 0.02% under 21. First offense is a serious misdemeanor (up to one year in jail, $1,250 minimum fine, 180-day license revocation). See the Iowa OWI law guide.

Can I get free legal help?

Possibly — Iowa Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to qualifying low-income Iowans (housing, family safety, public benefits, consumer). For criminal cases you can't afford a lawyer, the court appoints a public defender. The University of Iowa Law School also runs legal clinics handling some matters at no cost.

How long do I have to file a personal injury lawsuit?

In Iowa, generally 2 years from the date of injury for most personal injury claims. Medical malpractice and certain other claims have their own rules. See the Iowa statute of limitations guide. Don't wait — missing the deadline kills the claim.
